Escaping Shades of Black

I walked through life
With my eyes closed shut
And all that I saw was darkness

The sinister trees set ninety degrees
Towering over my head
Along a street of blackened sleet
I walked among the dead

There is no light, some people said
For the sky is a dulled gray
We take each step until time's end
And then we fade away

But there was a boy
Who said that he saw the light
He told me to open my eyes
To see that he was right

He told me of the colours
That dazzled all around
From the birds that fly above
To the flowers on the ground

He was the only one who said this
Everyone else said “no”
“It is too dangerous, don't look”
Why is it that they thought so?

I was scared to try
I was scared to face the strange
The unknown and wild
And the everlasting change

He looked at me and his eyes were calm
he stepped closer and held my hand
“Just open up one eye” he said
When you see you will understand

I stood there for a while
My heart began to beat fast
And then before I knew it
my eyes fluttered open at last

I turned to him and he smiled
I looked around and smiled too
When I looked down he said “Green”
And when I looked up he said “Blue”

And now I walk through life
With both eyes open wide
The sun shines upon me each day
And the colours are my guide
